The natural world around us consists of layers, and these record time. This concept explores layering in the natural and built world around us, how it records time and how time shapes it. As a tree grows it adds mass in the form of a cambium layer, annual growth can be measured accordingly, climate is recorded. Over time this cycle repeats itself, leaves fall and decay, creating a surface compost, a fertile bed for new growth. These decomposing layers are compressed and eventually form rock formations. These formations are weathered and eroded by our climate and the cycle continues. With this table, made out of stack laminated olive ash and burr, the designer looked to emphasise the pattern of erosion, the energy of material removal which is recorded in the remaining form. This relationship between erosion and the original composition is revealed in a layered fluid pattern carved by hand.
