The IDI Irish Design Awards exists to recognise, celebrate and promote exemplary design vision in Ireland. We aim to elevate how Irish Design is perceived, engaged with and appreciated by the wider community and across the international stage.

On 15th September 2017 #IDIAwards winners were announced at our annual gala event in Meeting House Square. What you will see here is a curated selection of the very best entries from the main event. Five Points is a friendly neighbourhood café in Harold’s Cross (Dublin), taking its name from the busy junction which it overlooks. The cafe is part-owned by Colin Harmon of 3fe and Adam Sheridan, an alumnus of that venerable Dublin coffee institution.

The Funicular Folly is a self-initiated project by Rae Moore, for Body & Soul, an annual music and arts festival. It is the first installation of its kind in Ireland, and will remain as a permanent feature on the grounds of Ballinlough Castle, Co.Westmeath, demonstrating the power and generosity of architecture as a contemporary art form.

The key challenge for this project was to take a very dry and niche subject (event safety) and communicate its value and importance in an interesting and memorable way. Event Safety is very much about process and planning so we were challenged in how to make the website content visual and interactive.

This was a really simple brief – to work in my usual way, but swapping traditional colouring pencils and paper for the Apple Pencil and iPadPro. I created two illustrations, an owl and a bear. As this would be my first time using digital drawing it was a very honest, learning on the job campaign, which effectively and honestly promotes the transition from traditional to digital media.

A creative and empathetic partnership between exhibition designer, architect and builder was critical to Fethard’s success. Design development bore the potential of the building in mind and holistic design ensures that the structure of the Tholsel is an essential part of the displays.

The brief required the design, build and install of a secure storage space within the domed rotunda of the Four Courts to be completed within 3 weeks. On a practical level the structure was to protect large carved stone capitals prior to them being hoisted up through a hole in the dome located over the centre of the rotunda.

The challenge: To transform an office space and entrance hallway of an unused building and an adjoining alleyway on South William Street into an eyecatching pop-up shop & café which would operate for 4 days, promote the sale of 4 new Fulfil bar flavours, 4 existing flavours, FroYo and coffee.

COLLABORATIVE DESIGN RATIONALE

Collaboration was a key theme of the project from the very beginning. The design team included several design-led companies (listed above) making this a collaborative design from the outset. With such an emphasis of collective design, Final year NCAD student, Kate O’Loughlin was brought on board to bring a unique and individual identity to the space through artwork and creative installations.

Lure was comissioned by Vogue as part of the Milano Fashion Film Festival for the brand ICEBERG. The video was for the festival and also for the brand’s website. The main challenge was to create a wonderful and abstract piece to showcase the clothing of ICEBERG’s label.

I took part in an exhibition of illustration in January 2017, a show called ‘Pinups’, which ran at the Fumbally Exchange in Dublin and in Kilkenny Arts Centre. The show was an homage to the songs of David Bowie. Each illustrator was given two of Bowie’s songs and was to create an image of each, conveying something of the spirit or content of the song.

Over 160,000 older homeowners are living alone in family-sized houses, with many living in mature, well-serviced, urban locations. For many of those homeowners, while their house is their greatest asset, it may also give rise to significant expense.

The ‘South Dublin Residence’ was a full architectural extension and structural configuration throughout the ground floor of a semi-detached suburban home in South Dublin. Kingston Lafferty Design (KLD) were the appointed Interior Architects who concepted, planned and designed the full layout of both the extension and the existing ground floor living spaces.

YouTube TV is a streaming TV service giving users access to Live TV and OnDemand Video from major broadcast and popular cable networks. The service includes a wide range of programming including local and national live sports and news, YouTube Originals and Shows, all of which can be recorded without storage limits.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN RATIONALE

As an industry, coffee at retail is the biggest energy offender in the energy value chain from seed-to-cup, due to poor beverage machine design and construction. We used new manufacturing techniques to solve this problem, for the first time in our industry we designed a hot water dispenser that uses a vacuum insulated tank.

The main challenge for this project was to create a fully believable and fun world of flowing and bouncing balls. The amount of physical balls that were shot was very limited, but gave us a great reference for the CG balls we needed to create and blend into the shots.

Windmill Lane was comissioned by digital agency In The Company of Huskies to portray the history of the Dunbrody famine ship, through a graphic and engaging manner, to be used on the Fáilte Ireland website. It was also used as part of the installation on the Dunbrody ship in Wexford, as part of Ireland’s Ancient East.

Enignum Shelves. This series is free formed in wood – arriving at forms which the material has influenced. It is a fluid process which brings the life of the material (wood) into the finished work, revealing not only the honesty of the structure but the sculpted form which is a unique collaboration of man and material.

This biennial conferences, organised in collaboration with host universities, have become an essential meeting point for the design research community. In next conference in 2018 will be co-hosted between University of Limerick and Limerick Institute of Technology/Limerick School of Art & Design.

The crucial stakeholder during the design process of the Clonakilty 400 Masterplan was the local community. Public engagement was at the base of the urban design process where people participated in the design development with active involvement and enthusiasm.
