LIMINAL

Liminal is a competition winning entry to design and construct an arts pavilion for the annual Hong Kong arts music and culture festival, Clockenflap, under the theme of ‘Cosmic and Communal’. Artists were invited to explore aspects of human experience and our relationship with the universe. We aimed to create a structure which would provide an experience without scale, in direct contrast to Hong Kong, a mega-city, where you can be outside but not see the horizon. Liminal is a reaction to this. The exterior of the structure is a 4m monolithic black timber cube, with a full height entrance passage which slopes both up and down. This small enclosed space reflects its contents in the mirrored walls, floor, and ceiling, creating the impression of an endless horizon. The introduction of bare, hanging bulbs enhances the visitor experience, creating the impression of an infinite cosmos.
